Cartoon: Tax cuts...for the children

Fortune Magazine says "Trump’s Tax Cuts Are the Biggest Wealth Grab in Modern History." That's quite a statement coming from a magazine that espouses wealth and growing it.

This is what Mike Luckovich has to say about the cuts:

Flamingos in the men's room

For a while on Wednesday, it looked like Irma might bestow her dire power on Washington, DC. But no housecleaning this time.

In today's post we have 2 cartoons and the image that inspired the title of today's post.

This article by NPR (National Public Radio) is a good read: Flamingos In The Men's Room.

More than 50 Caribbean flamingos take shelter in a men's restroom at the Miami Metrozoo (now Zoo Miami) on Sept. 25, 1998. Zookeepers rounded up the birds to protect them from the effects of Hurricane Georges. This was not the first time the zoo had to corral flamingos in a restroom. They were also in there during Hurricane Andrew, six years earlier.

Cartoons: let the TV cameras roll

This week we take a look at Trump's ever-more-closed empire; GOP senators as downed Confederate soldiers; and Trump's idea that he can pardon himself and his cronies, if worse comes to worse.

Felix Salmon at Salon says Scaramucci may be Trump’s most dangerous enabler yet.

Cartoons: White House Yard Sale and States' Rights

While many are mourning a 'reasonable' and 'predictable' presidency, the current challenges may herald the birth of states' rights movements not centered on holding fast to outmoded values (mostly Southern), such as segregation and other forms of bigotry. The venerable Nation, a publication that dates back to 1865, published recently "West Coast Politicians Are Fighting Back Against Donald Trump," stating
This could become the largest resistance movement to federal policy in more than a century.
The Washington Times wrote "California discovers states’ rights."

So will we soon see yard sales on the White House lawn offering Donald's and Ivanka's goods for sale? It's possible, but not if a congressional ethics review is, well, ethical.

Cartoons: Americans ARE watching

Something very interesting happened this week--Americans altered the course of GOP congressmen. On January 3rd there was this headline: With No Warning, House Republicans Vote to Gut Independent Ethics Office. Then American voters reacted: Amid Ethics Office Debacle, Googling Congress Members Spiked. Sort Of. Then, Under fire, Republicans back off vote on House ethics changes. Here's a small collection of some cartoonists' takes on the ethics situation.

Cartoons: Zika, academic testing, and Trump (again)

The 2016 Summer Olympics start today with the lighting of the cauldron by someone not Pelé. Here's cartoonist Nate Beeler's take on the event.

And school starts soon. Cartoonist Marshall Ramsey calls it "testing." Former venture capitalist and education philanthropist Ted Dintersmith and Education Fellow at the Technology & Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard (whew!) Tony Wagner co-wrote an article about academic testing and what it does not accomplish: Opinion: America desperately needs to redefine ‘college and career ready'. Is it old-fashioned or misguided to wonder what happened to learning for the sake of learning?

Cartoons: this week's outtakes (hopefully)

Looking at some of the trends from this week's news and editorial views, we see Hollywood producing the presidential election; Judge Judy as Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court; Trump added to Mt. Rushmore; the right to privacy as a fiction (made up by whom?); and the U.S Constitution vs. a cocktail napkin.

Cartoons: misfires

Today's mix looks at D. Trump's absence from the Thursday night debate, voter suppression in 22 states, and an accidental shooting in a movie theater.

On Thursday Trump staged an improvised fundraiser for American military veterans instead of attending the debate nearby. Quoting the article,
Mr. Trump organized the fundraiser to compete with the final candidates’ debate before the Iowa caucuses, in an effort to undercut viewership for the Fox News debate.

Many cartoonists are viewing his tactics as childish or cowardly, but not Mike Luckovich.

Cartoonist Steve Sack's view is more surreal.

While politicos are headed down the road to the election, conditions for the voters have changed dramatically: The last large-scale push to curb voting access was more than a century ago, after Reconstruction. Until now. Liberal magazine, The American Prospect, details how
Voters in 22 states will face tougher rules than in the last midterms. In 15 states, 2014 is slated to be the first major election with new voting restrictions in place.
Although American Prospect is not exactly an objective publication, don't expect conservative publications to offer reliable information on this topic. It's too late and maybe impossible to change these restrictions now, but citizens can help the minorities targeted setup their rights to vote in each state.
