Cartoons: grope this

This week's batch of cartoons has three about politics and one about Samsung's flaming Galaxy Note 7.

Since the second presidential debate featured Donald's "locker room talk," be warned. Here's a transcript.

As a woman, this is how I plan to handle Donald's loose talk. There's a word for his communication problems; it's 'logorrhoea,' or diarrhea of the mouth. I'm not saying anything about the accusations of sexual misconduct, enough has already been said.

Cartoons: US riots you rarely hear about and other news

After wading through uncounted, but numerous, digs at Trump and Hillary, I was about to bag posting today when I came across the cartoon below. It refers to a riot in Milwaukee. A little research yielded a truly interesting piece by Milwaukee resident and medieval historian, Andrew Larsen. Take a look: The Milwaukee Riots. He starts with the observation that "Riots seem shocking to modern Americans, but college students riot with almost predictable regularity in this country."

What would a mention of the news be nowadays without reference to the Trump-Hillary polls? While typing this a devilish idea occurred to me: what if they were a couple? Then a second one sprang up: what if we smooshed the parties together and declared Hillary president, Donald vice president and were done with the whole sordid business? Then we could move on...or maybe not. At any rate here are the latest polls courtesy of RealClearPolitics.

Now, for an upbeat note, here's Walt Handelsman's take on the emergency response to flooding in Louisiana. Obama has taken flack for seeming uninterested, so here's what his Live Updates page reports.

Cartoons: is there a mystery candidate?

Batten down the hatches, the GOP convention starts Monday in Cleveland. It should be quite a show.

In 2012 the Onion published a video, GOP Introduces New "Mystery Candidate" With Paper Bag Over Head. The text of the article reads "Republicans will reveal the identity of the Mystery Candidate only after he, or she, wins the election." Cartoonist Bob Gorrell remembers.

Trump will go into the convention with his new running mate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. (Be aware, Hillary's campaign ads are posted smack dab in the middle of the article.)

Cartoons: an unusual dance

For the past year (or more) we've been living in a political world of constantly updated predictions. To me a prediction is not news, it's fairy dust that settles to the ground as soon as the reality kicks in. But I have to agree with John Boehner, former House Speaker, when he says 'Knuckleheads' in Both Parties Will Determine 2016 Election.

On that note, let's step back and take a look at what we've seen.

Cartoons: wordplay

Three of today's cartoons feature a play on words; the fourth is an outlier in more ways than one.

Marshall Ramsey: "Stupor Tuesday"
***

Bob Gorrell: "Trumped"
***

Tom Toles: "the T party"
***

David Fitzsimmons: Hannibal Lecter vs. Frederick Charles "Freddy" Krueger

Cartoons: Gotham City's Batman to the rescue?

It's all politics in my cartoon world today, except for one about the Zika Virus and one about lead levels in Flint vs. those in Pennsylvania. So here are my picks.

Can we all agree that presidential politics have gone to hell in a handbasket, or in this case a dumpster, this election cycle?

Cartoons: It's a new year, make yourself at home

D. Trump will likely moderate (verb) the coming year for us. (This may be the only time you hear the words moderate (adjective) and Donald Trump in the same sentence.) By this time next year Trump will be a fading memory or we will have to listen more attentively to what he has to say.

Cartoons: is it the world or our perceptions that are warped?

Today's mix includes comments on global warming and the Paris climate talks, college youth today, and a "new" definition of the Nativity, which may have been the definition all along.

No doubt Earth is in a desperate place right now, not necessarily from global warming alone; there's terrorism, closed minds, and greed heading a list of problems to numerous to name.

Representing developing nations as Pigpen from Charles Schultz' Peanuts may seem to be in poor taste, but his character had a lot of depth to it. However, on the surface, Pigpen fits the Western nations' view of the undeveloped. At least that's how I see it. This week food was on the agenda at the Paris climate talks.

VW disappoints. Wikipedia tells us that the Volkswagen, Beetle version, was originally "formulated by Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, wishing for a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for the new road network of his country." The simple, cheap part of his concept was discarded years ago. Did you know that Volkswagen installed "software known as "defeat devices" in many of its diesel cars to evade federal emission limits?"

Cartoons: Amazon, Ashley Madison, and the fifth party

Big news this week from the New York Times is the exposé of Amazon's work culture.
***

In a followup article the Times reports:
Until the publication of the article, Amazon’s management practices had been a matter of quiet debate in Seattle. But after the article was published and Mr. Bezos’s letter was released, current and former Amazonians wrote on social media, technology websites and The Times website to compare experiences and debate the strengths and weaknesses of the culture. Some defended the culture as highly demanding but humane, while others described feeling pummeled by unrelenting demands, over-the-top competition, and a feeling they could never meet the standards that the company boasts are “unreasonably high.”
