Tea, Earl Grey, hot

Star Trek's food replicator may be closer than you think.  NASA even now is printing pizza, as reported in theGuardian and other news sources.  Replication of mechanical parts is already a reality.

For those of you who are not Trekkies (or more casual fans of Star Trek), the food replicators (not to be confused with the Stargate replicators) in the series could produce verbally requested items on demand. As with most technology, one has to be specific:

While NASA has its eye on food replication, U.S manufacturing is being transformed.  In a form of pedal-to-the-metal 3D printing, layers of metal are deposited and bound to a form built up from a design programmed into the printer.  This process is revolutionizing American industry; as the NewScientist puts it "A Second Industrial Revoluton is Underway."  More to the point is this a piece from Time Magazine (requires a paid subscription), "Made in the USA."
The technology is called additive manufacturing, or more colloquially, 3-D printing. When most people talk about 3-D printing, they mean fun devices for hobbyists that can print plastic toys and other small objects when hooked up to a computer. When they talk about it at ExOne Corp., they're describing something a lot bigger. Additive manufacturing involves what looks like spray-painting a metal object into existence. These 3-D printers lay down a very thin layer of stainless-steel powder or ceramic powder and fuse it with a liquid binder until a part--like a torque converter, heat exchanger or propeller blade--is built, layer by layer. ExOne's employees are ramping up production lines to make 3-D printers at a price of about $400,000. Would-be manufacturing entrepreneurs can buy the devices and begin turning out high-tech metal parts for aerospace, automotive and other industries at lower cost and higher quality faster than offshore suppliers.
Look around the ExOne site to get an idea of the capabilities of this field.  The article from Time also offers a vision of manufacturing in the future:
ExOne's 3-D-printing machines, like a lot of new technology, will displace some labor. A foundry, for instance, no longer needs workers carting patterns around a warehouse; it can print molds and cores stored on a thumb drive, and no patterns are needed. An ExOne shop with 12 metal-printing machines needs only two employees per shift, supported by a design engineer--though they are higher-skilled workers. Rockwell [ExOne's CEO] envisions a thousand new industrial flowers blooming. "There's a world of guys out there who say, If you can deliver parts in six or seven days, hey, I don't need the machines. That's where job creation is going to come from." Overseas competitors will not be able to deliver that quickly or at the same level of quality.
Seems to me it's got to be good if it get American employers off the offshore outsourcing teet.

DIY: print a plastic pistol

Since everyone is talking about this gun, a true do-it-yourself project, here's my two-cents.  As Forbes says "3D-Printed Gun Fires a New 'Shot Heard 'Round The World'."  Defense Distributed did it, as shown in this video:


The Verge notes that "Lawmakers rush to ban 3D-printed guns, but enforcement options are murky."  This article from TheGuardian gives some background on Cody Wilson, head of Defense Distributed (DD).

Photos of the gun, called the Liberator, and replicas can be found in this Forbes article, "DIY Firearms Makers Are Already Replicating And Remixing The 3D-Printed Gun."  Blueprints for the pistol were published to the internet, but DD took them down in response to a "request" by the Feds (U.S. Department of Defense Trade Controls), according to this article by Policymic.  Before they were removed, the blueprints were "...Downloaded 100,000 Times In Two Days ..."

While the gun can fire only one shot, how accurate is it?  Can you hit what you aim at or does the bullet come to rest somewhere not intended?  Can it explode in your hand(s)? An article in Scientific American discusses some of the factors involved in printing the gun and using a plastic one.

Possibly the do-it-yourself project you choose can be fatal.

Just a soupçon of science for today

If you have an inquiring mind and like to be surprised, take a look at Science Daily.  Here are the titles and links to 4 of the articles available now:
Looking at the last article, about solar activity, reminded me that I've been wanting to know how the quest for power generation by fusion is going.  Fusion promises to produce power cleanly, with no radioactive waste for disposal or threat of reactor meltdown.  But developing a reactor that produces more energy than it uses has been a problem.

This site ITER  ("The Way" in Latin) gives some very good information about fusion. ITER is an actual device; the demo is being built now. Take a look at the 60 years of progress page:
Steady progress has been made since in fusion devices around the world. The Tore Supra Tokamak that is part of the Cadarache nuclear research centre holds the record for the longest plasma duration time of any tokamak: six minutes and 30 seconds. The Japanese JT-60 achieved the highest value of fusion triple product—density, temperature, confinement time—of any device to date. US fusion installations have reached temperatures of several hundred million degrees Celsius.
 Achievements like these have led fusion science to an exciting threshold: the long sought-after plasma energy breakeven point. Breakeven describes the moment when plasmas in a fusion device release at least as much energy as is required to produce them. Plasma energy breakeven has never been achieved: the current record for energy release is held by JET, which succeeded in generating 70 percent of input power. Scientists have now designed the next-step device—ITER—which will produce more power than it consumes: for 50 MW of input power, 500 MW of output power will be produced.

Fusion research has increased key fusion plasma performance parameters by a factor of 10,000 over 50 years; research is now less than a factor of 10 away from producing the core of a fusion power plant.

3D printing: you can print with chocolate, too

 O.K., maybe it was more than three.  Wikipedia has a good article on it too. You can even build your own printer or buy a kit for one.

With a 3D printer, the proper materials and a 3D drawing, you can print objects like these at Shapeways.  This site also has lots of information and offers the materials you need for forming objects.  

Services to do the printing for you are available as well.  Stratasys Learn category has good information.

If you want to do the whole thing yourself, you'll have to buy (pricey) and learn (steep learning curve) a 3D application, sometimes called CAD/CAM (computer-aided design, computer-aided modelling).  At Shapeway's site you can find a list of supported applications

Kinda brings to mind StarTrek's replicator.  "Earl Grey tea, hot."
